Should You Change to a Tankless Water Heater?

by Kyung Kim 08/29/2019

There are quite a lot of reasons why you should consider a tankless heater today. Apart from the fact that it is easy to maintain, it looks attractive, and it does not run out of hot water. Below are a variety of the reasons why you should upgrade to a tankless heater.

It saves space

The traditional heaters take up to 20 cubic feet of space, but the tankless heaters are sometimes smaller than a laptop, so they do not eat up space. So, one advantage of using a tankless unit is that it provides you with enough space in case you have something to hang or display.

It saves electricity cost

Tankless heaters come with self-modulating technology. When the sensors attain the minimum activation rate, the heater is activated. This unit is better than the traditional heater that keeps functioning even while you are not at home. Most tankless heaters have a standby mode feature that comes into play at idle hours when energy consumption low.

Tankless units are more energy efficient

A household that uses an energy star qualified tankless heater saves about $100 or more every year.  A home that required about 41 gallons of water on daily can save up to 34 percent energy with a tankless unit.

Easy maintenance

Tank type units are challenging to maintain when compared with a tankless unit. You can de-scale a tankless system via its maintenance valve within an hour. When carrying out this maintenance, you have to shut off the water valve to disallow cold water from surging in.  To get your unit cleaned, get five gallons of undiluted white vinegar, you can also use a chemical for this purpose provided you are not drinking the water.  White vinegar is preferred to avoid contamination.

Increased life span

Tankless units are the best when it comes to durability. One reason why they last longer than traditional heaters is that they do not operate continuously for a long time. Many homes use this unit for an hour or two hours daily while the tank heater runs round the clock.

Also, there is a tendency of elements like calcium and magnesium piling up in a tank heater due to prolonged storage of hard water that contains these elements. The accumulation of this minerals may reduce the lifespan of a tank heater, making it last less than the tankless unit.

Are you still contemplating whether to upgrade your tank heating system to a tankless unit? Consider the above reasons to know why a tankless unit is more helpful than the traditional heater.

Kyung Kim

Hi, I'm Kyung Kim. I immigrated from South Korea to the United States in 1968 when I was 7 years old. I have seen my mom struggle with the English language and work hard to raise her four kids by herself. Still to this day, I don't know how she pulled it off, but she bought her first home in 1979 for $70,000 and because of that decision, she was able to live without worrying about her financial future. I want that for everyone, to feel the pride of home ownership and to build their financial wealth using real estate as part of their financial portfolio. I feel so blessed to play a small role in helping others reach this goal.

I live in Beaverton with my husband, Richard. My mom, who lived with us for several years, passed away in our home in February 2022. Her first home purchase in 1979 made it possible for her to live to the very end, without worrying about her finances. As of August 2022 with a little downpayment assistance, our four children own their own homes. Being in real estate, I quickly realized that if they didn't buy now, they may be priced out of the market in the future. Whether that would have been the case, we will never know, but what we do know is that they are all realizing some good, healthy appreciation in their home values.

As passionate as I am about people owning their homes, I'm also passionate about giving back to our community. I support Compassion First, a non-profit organization that provides aftercare for sex trafficked girls in Indonesia. My husband and I also feel called to financially support social injustice organizations.

I'd love to assist you. Whether you're in the research phase at the beginning of your real estate search or you know exactly what you're looking for, you'll benefit from having a real estate professional by your side. I'd be honored to put my real estate experience to work for you.
